A native of Fukuoka, Japan, pianist Harumi Makiyama currently leads an active professional life in Seattle area as a concert pianist, collaborative artist, piano teacher, and adjudicator.
Harumi has received her Doctor of Musical Art degree in Piano Performance from University of Washington. Her dissertation, titled Mental Preparation for Piano Performance Using Principles of Aikido, looks for the intervention for Musical Performance Anxiety (MPA) in ancient wisdom, the Shinto and Zen bases of the Japanese martial art of Aikido, which directly translates to "The Way of Harmony," for an innovative step-by-step approach to literally take the mental and physical violence out of MPA. Harumi earned her Graduate Diploma and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from New England Conservatory of Music, and another Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in Piano Performance from Elisabeth University of Music in Hiroshima, Japan.
Dr. Rie Ando is a native of Japan who began studying piano at the age of three. She studied piano at the Toho Gakuen School of Music, Western Washington University, and the University of Washington under Nobuyoshi Kato, Dr. Lorraine Min, and Craig Sheppard as well as study with a Polish pianist, Pawel Skrzypek. During her study, she has performed in many concerts throughout Poland, Japan, California, and Washington. Besides solo performing, Dr. Ando studied opera-accompanying under a legendary Italian Opera coach Maestro Ubaldo Gardini for three years.
Currently, Dr. Ando is teaching a wide range of ages and levels of piano students in Bellevue. She is also looking forward to performing in upcoming concerts in the Seattle area and Japan.
The program is going to be Sonata for Four-Hands in C Major, K. 521 by W.A. Mozart, a couple of selected songs from the Slavonic Dances by Antonín Dvořák, and Ma mère l'Oye (suite) by French composer, Maurice Ravel.
